A life without worry about your bladder

"Empowering women worldwide to retake control of their health and lives through safe and proven bioelectronic medicine"

About FemPulse

FemPulse is dedicated to improving the quality of life for women suffering from overactive bladder (OAB).The Company is developing an intravaginal medical device that uses controlled electronic pulses or “stimulation” to regulate dysfunctional nerves responsible for the false sensation of the urgent need to urinate and relieve the symptoms of OAB. FemPulse is seeking to move neuromodulation for OAB from an expensive, invasive alternative available only through an interventional specialist to an affordable, self-administered first choice available from a woman’s OB/GYN.

You are not alone!

17% of women worldwide – that’s about 1 in 6 women – live with overactive bladder
20 million women in the U.S. alone (with 60% of working age)

OAB is a highly prevalent and disruptive condition worldwide

OAB represents a large, unmet medical need involving the sudden, urgent need to urinate with or without leakage. OAB impacts a person’s freedom, independence, relationships, and quality of life. Current therapies are inadequate with serious limitations including efficacy, cognitive effects, compliance, cost, and invasiveness. Female OAB in the U.S.costs the healthcare system $44.6 billion annually, 77% of which is comprised of direct medical costs, such as including primary and specialist care, prescriptions, diagnostics, and interventions. In fact, more than 19 million prescriptions for OAB are written each year in the U.S., yet 80% of them are discontinued within the first few months due to numerous, intolerable side effects.

The FemPulse™ Technology

State of the Art Technology

FemPulse’s technology focuses on providing personalized, affordable and discreet therapy for women with OAB via a disposable ring controlled by an easy-to-use mobile-device app. The self-administered, vaginal ring is intended to provide mild stimulation to calm signals that help regulate bladder sensation and relieve the symptoms of OAB.

Elegant and Discreet Design

The goal of the FemPulse technology is to provide women with the benefits of continuous and individualized neuromodulation with minimal hassle or embarrassment, while altogether avoiding surgery and invasive implants. The therapy is prescribed by a woman’s doctor and placed by the patient herself in the convenience and privacy of her own home, much like other intravaginal devices. It features a familiar, patient-focused design with a patented approach developed by a leading urogynecologist, who designed the device after treating many of her patients.

How it Works

FemPulse’s solution is designed to target and regulate nerves passing between the bladder and central nervous system

OAB is a neurosensory condition in which sufferers experience a frequent false sensation to urinate urgently due to mis-signaling within the nervous system (CNS). The condition is characterized by abnormal spinal reflex signaling to muscles of the bladder that are normally relaxed as the bladder fills. When this neural pathway malfunctions, there is a false sense of fullness and resulting in a sudden and strong urge to urinate. FemPulse’s bioelectronic therapy is intended to target this neural dysfunction by sending electrical pulses to stimulate and regulate the pathway to prevent the false sensation.

Dr. Alexandra Haessler, MD

Created by a woman, for women

Dr. Alexandra Haessler, MD, a board-certified urogynecologist practicing in San Francisco, was as frustrated as her patients when it came to available treatment options for OAB. Standard of care treatment options, such as behavioral modification and pelvic floor physical therapy , and often left patients unsatisfied with unalleviated symptoms. Some second- and third-line therapies were not covered by insurance and while implanted neuromodulation worked well, it required a surgical procedure and high expense. Dr. Haessler kept waiting for advances in technology to provide women with a vaginal insertable device, rather than an implanted, neuromodulation option. But when an alternative never arrived, she took it upon herself to develop a new device-based therapy based on her years of experience with neuroanatomic and physiologic principles from urogynecology practice. Her deep knowledge of neurological intricacies of the science combined with her understanding of women's treatment goals enabled her to develop an effective non-invasive system to treat the source of the issue. Dr. Haessler patented the design and started FemPulse to develop and clinically investigate the device.

About the Inventor

Alexandra Haessler, MD, FACOG, Founder and Chief Medical Officer
Dr. Alexandra Haessler invented and refined the technology underlying FemPulse. As a urogynecologist, she was as frustrated as her OAB patients with the shortcomings of available solutions to Overactive Bladder (OAB).Though OAB is not a dangerous or fatal condition, it persists as a stressful and onerous burden on the lives of sufferers. Many therapies are not covered by insurance, and while implanted neuromodulation works well, the procedure remains prohibitively expensive for most and entails highly invasive surgery. Dr. Haessler kept waiting for advances in technology to produce a vaginal indwelling, rather than implanted, neuromodulation option. But when an alternative never arrived, she took it upon herself to develop it.Her background with neuroanatomic and physiologic principles coupled with her understanding of the particular needs of women enabled her to develop an effective system to treat the source of the issue. She envisions that the FemPulse technology’s ease-of-use combined with affordability will make OAB neuromodulation therapy available to any woman.

Talk to your Doctor Today

While FemPulse therapy is not yet available for general use, you are urged to contact your health care provider and share your overactive bladder symptoms or concerns. Do not suffer in silence as symptoms generally worsen with age. Health care providers have alternative to help with OAB.

Symptoms of OAB include:

  • Frequent involuntary loss of urine
  • An urgent and uncontrollable need to urinate
  • Frequent urination (more than eight times in a 24-hour period)
  • Waking up more than once a night to use the bathroom
